Things to do at Machiya Club


Machiya Club offers more than just accommodation. It also functions as a cultural center for a diversity of people including local residents. Guests can explore deep culture and experience the local way of life, while immersed in the traditional atmosphere of Omihachiman’s old historical district. In particular, there are specialty shops and craft studios which share our facilities, where you can also experience one-of-a-kind workshops and activities. Please make an appointment directly with the individual shops and studios. Advance appointments required.

Vintage Jewelry Handcraft Workshop

Handcraft shop of various antique and vintage items of Japanese and European origin. They also sell the shop owner’s own original handmade jewelry, crafted with vintage buttons and beads. Lessons and workshops such as handcrafting and accessory making are available.

Leather Craft Workshop

Leather craft shop specializing in one-of-a-kind leather items such as quality, handcrafted bags and purses. Bags made from leather and locally-produced canvas offer simple yet sophisticated style. One particularly popular piece, and a perfect souvenir for a special someone, is a canvas bag colored with a unique shade of blue dye called “Biwako Blue” (Biwako means Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, which is located here in Shiga). Experience making small leather items such as keyholders here in their shop.

Kimono Fitting & Hair Dressing Experience

These local experts of Kimono-fitting and traditional hair sets offer a memorable experience for both male and female guests. Fitted with a beautiful kimono outfit and hair set, enjoy a stroll out to our traditional gardens or the historical Hachiman-bori area for some amazing photos. Professional photographer or tour guide can be arranged by request.
